FAQ:
OPA Recruitment Process

-
What is Omega Phi Alpha?Omega Phi Alpha is a National Service Sorority with active chapters at universities across the nation. Omega Phi Alpha is lucky to have a diverse multicultural membership, something we take pride in and recognize as one of our strengths. Omega Phi Alpha is not a member of the National Panhellenic Council; however, some chapters are affiliated with their university’s Panhellenic Council. The Alpha Alpha chapter does not affiliate with the Panhellenic Council. Omega Phi Alpha welcomes all new members who are willing to prove their commitment by fulfilling new member requirements, including those who are members of social sororities.

How is a Service Sorority different? Most of the national sororities in the United States are social sororities. Omega Phi Alpha is a service sorority. The two types have a lot in common, but there are a few distinct differences. Like social sororities, Omega Phi Alpha has a pledge period where new members learn about the sorority’s history and policies. Omega Phi Alpha also has big sisters, social outings, formals, etc. We also recognize that social sororities do service projects, just like we do. The distinguishing feature is the day-to-day emphasis of each group. Although social sororities have an important role to play on each university campus, their main emphasis is on fellowship. In contrast, Omega Phi Alpha chapters have an ongoing commitment to community service, not just one or two big fundraisers or philanthropic events per year. In addition to helping worthwhile charities raise money, Omega Phi Alpha sisters get down in the trenches and get their hands dirty working on less glamorous service projects. We swing hammers with Habitat for Humanity. We help the local Girl Scouts earn their first aid badge. We help sort out donated food at the food bank. We answer the phones at the pledge drive for the local PBS station. We pick up trash on the beach or by the highway. The projects we undertake are selected by the members themselves.

How does the Pledge Process work?During the pledge process, the PNM will complete a semester as a Potential New Member learning the history of Omega Phi Alpha. Along with learning the history, they will also learn how to complete service while in college for our four areas: the university community, the community at large, the members of the sorority, and the nations of the world. The PNM will need to be able to attend a weekly meeting, which will help them learn about our history, and also to plan some of their very own service projects. More information about the pledge process will be included once they are given a bid and become a PNM.
-
What is the minimum GPA in order to be considered for OPA?The minimum GPA to be considered for OPA is 2.5.
-
How much time would I be dedicating to OPA while going to school? You will have your busy moments in your life as a student, but there are several opportunities to attend events and meet requirements during the semester that will help you plan out your schedule easily.
-
What is a dry sorority?Omega Phi Alpha is a dry sorority. This means that our organization does not partake in any form of alcohol or drug use. It is a moral that our sisterhood values for the better of the organization, and that we do not connect the sorority with said items.
-
What kind of service projects does Omega Phi Alpha do?Because service is Omega Phi Alpha's main purpose, we complete a multitude of service projects each semester. We focus on our four main areas, the university community, the community at large, the members of the sorority, and the nations of the world. For each area, we do a numerous amount of projects, for example in the university community we do projects such as campus clean-ups, body-positive booths, awareness events, etc. For the community at large in Flagstaff, we do events such as can collecting for local shelters, Adopt-an-Avenue events, and helping out at the Special Olympics. For members projects, we do a lot of teach-a-sister, such as life important skills like cooking, resume building, or fun events like movie nights and defensive training. In the last area, nations, we do events for raising awareness in sex trafficking in other countries by hosting a 5K and having documentaries. As shown we do many events giving everyone a chance to meet hours and participate in fun service projects.
-
Are there still tradtional sorority things like bigs/littles, ceremonies, etc.?"At Omega Phi Alpha we do have the same traditions as many other sororities. We participate in big/littles with families, our own special ceremonies, etc. We have our own social events like having a float in the homecoming parade and having a special tailgating event. We also host a yearly charity formal, to where everyone is invited!
-
How does the price compare to Panhellenics?Omega Phi Alpha's prices are much lower than Panhellenics. As a pledge, the price is $170. Once a member is activated their price is $120 a semester, making us one of the cheapest sororities on NAU's campus.
-
What are leadership opportunites like?Leadership is a large part of Omega Phi Alpha, and we pride ourselves in the number of leadership opportunities that we have. Leadership opportunities in OPA range from a major leadership role such as being on our executive board, being the President or Vice President of the Sorority, to more minor leadership roles such as being a committee head or being on the Standards Board. We encourage every member to be a leader in the sorority, either by being these many roles or helping take initiative and create their own service project.
